Unlike most of Isabel Allende’s literary production, the action in
El cuaderno de Maya(
Maya’s Notebook) starts not in the author’s native Chile, but in California, where Allende has lived for the past twenty-six years, and which is the setting of some of her previous novels, such as
The Infinite Plan(
El plan infinito) and
Daughter of Fortune(
Hija de la fortuna). Very soon after the start of the novel, however, its protagonist, Maya, is sent by her Chilean grandmother, Nini, to her family’s native Chile to try to solve her problems with drugs.
Maya’s Notebook recounts the life of nineteen-year-old Maya Vidal, who warns us that “la estricta verdad puede ser tediosa y por eso, sin darme ni cuenta, la cambio o la exagero” [“the simple truth can be dull and, because of that,
