The novel was subsequently published in boards in 1874 by Maxwell of London. Whilst Braddon’s name is more commonly associated with the sensation novels that she wrote in the 1860s, Jennifer Carnell reminds us that Braddon was “the author of approximately ninety books written between 1860 and 1915” (Carnell, 2000: 1).
