Móricz’s first published novel,
Sárarany[
Gold in the Mud], appeared initially in 1910 in the recently founded
Nyugat[
West] literary magazine in serial form, and was published in 1911 by
Nyugatin book form. The novel met with immediate public success and saw seven new editions published within less than a decade (Nemeskürty 812), with subsequent editions to follow in steady succession.
Sáraranynarrates the tragic downfall of an ambitious peasant, Dani Turi, who attempts to engage his rare talents as an agricultural producer to improve his social status. His efforts are blocked by the feudal landlords, Countess Helene and her paramour, Count László, and their refusal to accord the peasant and his aspirations the same serious regard they reserve for members of their own…
