Forever and Ever Amen

is Joe Pemberton’s first novel originally published in 2000 by Headline rRview and reissued in 2008 by Matador. Set in 1960s Moss Side Manchester, the novel draws heavily on Pemberton’s own recollections of growing up in Moss Side and describes the real and imagined childhood experiences of nine year old James as he and his family anticipate a move to Ashton-Under-Lyne, Tameside Greater Manchester. James’ parents migrated separately in the late fifties from the former British colony, St Kitts, in the West Indies. Their memories and experiences resonate in James’ own fractured narration, signalling not only the ongoing connection between these two locations, but also the effects that parental migration and transition have on the outlook of a British-born boy.…
