Although the story is narrated in the third person, it is partially autobiographical. Like Desbiens, his main character, the invisible man, is a student at Timmins’ Saint-Alphonse School and Sacred Heart College; like Desbiens’ mother, the invisible man’s mother dies before he reaches adulthood; both the author and his protagonist leave their Northern Ontario hometown of Timmins for the bright lights of Toronto even though they do not stay there very long; both live for a while in the Quebecois countryside before moving to Quebec City and taking up a job at a local record store.
