Discourses on the Condition of the Great

] have not reached us being written directly by Pascal. They were published after Pascal’s death (1662) by Pierre Nicole, one of Pascal’s friends, in his short treatise

De l’éducation d’un prince

(1670), which became

Traité de l’éducation d’un prince. Seconde édition revue et corrigée

(1671). The comparison between these discourses and a series of fragments from Pascal’s

Pensées

supports the hypothesis according to which Pierre Nicole transcribed Blaise Pascal’s views after being present at a series of meetings that had taken place between Pascal and the marquis Charles Honoré d’Albert, the future Duke of Chevreuse (born in 1646).
