Julia Kristeva is widely known for her work in the fields of psychoanalysis, linguistics, and literary theory, with her fictional texts receiving less attention than her theoretical ones. When approaching fiction, Kristeva often chooses the detective novel genre:

In these works, the search for a murderer is combined with contemporary theoretical and social concerns, such as the loss of the father, or questions of origins, identity and self-definition (both at the individual and community levels).
