The Awntyrs off Arthure at the Terne Wathelyn survives in four manuscript copies: Oxford, Bodleiain Library MS Douce 324 (hereafter “D”); Lambeth Palace Library MS 491.B (“L”); Lincoln Cathedral Library MS 91 (the Lincoln Thornton MS, “T”); and Princeton, NJ, Robert H. Taylor Collection MS 9 (formerly the Ireland Blackburn MS, “I”). The number of extant copies suggests a fair amount of contemporary popularity. The poem itself has been dated repeatedly to the second decade of the fifteenth century, with Rosamund Allen arguing for a date of composition around 1424-5 for Joan Neville, wife of the earl Ralph Neville of Westmorland, perhaps on the event of a betrothal (Allen, 2004, 193-94).
