SchooldaysThe first section traces the friendship between Edward Kallem and Ole Tuft. Edward and his sister Josephine live with their father, who, since the loss of his wife, has often “lost control of himself dealing with Edward” (44), but the boy is “a shameful tease” (45), often causing complaints from the neighbours. Ole Tuft, son of a now dead lay preacher, is an idealistic youth, who unbeknown to his peers, visits the sick with his Bible and his tracts, and dreams of mission work.
