Overview

The Mocedades de Rodrigo (MR) is a medieval epic poem composed in Spanish in the second half of the fourteenth century. It tells of the early life of Spain’s emblematic epic hero, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid. Throughout the tale of the young Rodrigo’s exploits, the poet consciously interweaves the story of the foundation of the diocese of Palencia, a town in northern Castile. The poem is written in epic form, in stanzas of four lines of irregular length, each split into hemistichs and linked by assonance.
