was first staged at the Almeida, Islington, London on 17th October 2017. The name ‘Albion’ – an ancient poetic name for Britain – signalled that this was a “condition of England” play, and implied it would address what ‘Britain’ might mean, given that following the Brexit referendum of June 2016 the country was intensely debating its historical direction. The first reviews certainly saw the play as a contribution to this process. (See below.)
