It was shortlisted for the 2017 Costa Novel Award; the 2018 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature; the 2019 Liberaturpreis; the 2019 International Dublin Literary Award, and was longlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize. Shamsie was born and raised in Karachi and is a writer of Muslim origin. She has lived in Pakistan, Britain, and the United States, and this hybrid background is reflected in the global sweep of her novels. She now resides primarily in London.
