Mir Mosharraf Hossain (1847? -1911?) initially published his best-known work,

Bishad-Sindhu

Ocean of Sorrow

], in three books. The first book of this Bengali epic novel when translated into English was titled “History of the Muharram” and was published in 1885; the second, “Rescue”, came out in 1887, and the third, “The Killing of Yazid” saw the light of print in 1891. The novel became immensely popular during Hossain’s lifetime; by the time he died in 1911 it was into its eighth edition. While alive, he continued to make changes to the work, although the first edition itself was received enthusiastically by most Bengali critics of the period.
