(
TPF) was published in April 1946 by Viking Press as number eighteen in the Viking Portable Library series (Kryger). Edited with an introduction and additional transitional notes by Malcolm Cowley, it consists of a selection of stories and excerpts from novels arranged in a structure of Cowley’s design, which he purports to be, as the front cover proclaims, “THE SAGA OF YOKNAPATAWPHA COUNTY, 1820-1945, BEING THE FIRST CHRONOLOGICAL PICTURE OF FAULKNER’S MYTHICAL COUNTY IN MISSISSIPPI”. Cowley collaborated with Faulkner throughout the process of assembling the collection, and the record of that collaboration and of their friendship is contained in a slim volume Cowley published four years after Faulkner’s death entitled
