William Faulkner wrote
The Marionettesin 1920, but it remained unpublished for more than fifty years. When Faulkner enrolled as a special student at the University of Mississippi in September 1919, he began almost immediately to contribute poems, essays, and reviews to
The Mississippian, the student newspaper, and his first published short story, “Landing in Luck”, appeared there (Blotner, 64, 78, & 90-91). He also published several drawings in the university yearbook, and in the fall of 1920, he joined a new university drama group, The Marionettes (77 & 89).
