Another Gulmohar Tree

(2009), turns an intimate gaze on a mixed-heritage marriage that doesn’t fall prey to cultural clashes. It was received with great critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize in the Europe and Asia category. With its portrayal of a London-born, European protagonist who leads a fulfilling life in Karachi, Hussein’s novel escapes the trappings of hackneyed postcolonial narratives about Western women who find their lives in disarray in the East and moves beyond Western perceptions of irreconcilable differences in “mixed marriages”.
