. This autobiographical work begins by detailing the origins of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s family and ends abruptly in 1954. It is basically a prison book in the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi’s

My Experiments with Truth

(1932), a work written in confinement that made us aware of the role this national hero played in India’s independence movement, and his thoughts and experiences relating to them.

The Unfinished Memoirs

can also be read as the portrait of the national hero as a young man, his discovery of his vocation, his apprenticeship, and the ideas that would shape his politics and augment his vision for his people. Written sometime between 1966 to 1969, when Mujib was made to serve time…
