A feature of autobiographical writing in France from the 1930s onwards is its high level of output. A large output of critical works on the genre is also striking. Among the more prominent contributors to the field of criticism are Philippe Lejeune, Jacques Lecarme, Elaine Lecarme-Tabone, Béatrice Didier, Serge Doubrovsky, Bruno Vercier, Pierre-Jean Dufief and Michael Sheringham. These critics study autobiographical writing as a literary genre. This is also the approach of Michel Contat, but from a different angle. Contat is associated with genetic criticism, which studies the evolution of the preparation of the text and the various metamorphoses which it has undergone.
