Bilal Tanweer’s first novel,
The Scatter Here is Too Great(2013), was published by Random House India. In 2014 it won the Shakti Bhatt First Book Award, The Chautauqua Prize in 2015, and in the same year it was short-listed for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.
In the novel, Tanweer harnesses the frenetic energy of Karachi to create an unapologetic portrait of urban middle-class angst. Tanweer, who grew up in Karachi, has spoken about the frustrations of being a middle-class person in the mega-city and how “you face indignities everywhere” (2018). Besides this, Tanweer mentions the lack of a social safety net, minimal private space, and even the absence of beauty, as contributing to a feeling of anger and malaise.
