Tímaþjófurinn, or
The Thief of Time, was first published in 1986 and has since had a significant impact on Icelandic literature . During the year of its release, the novel – and indeed its captivating novelty – enjoyed immediate praise and attention (Valdimarsdóttir 2017).
Tímaþjófurinn guides its readers through the main character’s, the thirty-seven-year-old Alda Ívarsen’s, experiences in the realm of love and life – that is, her haps and mishaps, even though the narratives of misfortune outweigh and outnumber those of luck. One of the first yet enduring and foreboding marks of the uneasy communion of love, life, and death in the novel is the mortal fate of Alda’s former lover, Steindór, as he drowns at sea.
