The Windrush Generation refers to a group of people who emigrated from the Caribbean to the United Kingdom between 1948 and 1971, in response to a labour shortage in post-war Britain. This generation was named after the ship HMT Empire Windrush, which arrived at the Port of Tilbury in Essex, England on June 22, 1948, carrying what is commonly reported to be the first large group of Caribbean immigrants. The Windrush generation was invited by the British government to come to the UK to help rebuild the country after World War II, but they faced discrimination and racism upon arrival.
