Naomi Gibson’s
Every Line of You(2021) is concerned with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it might be used in everyday life. The AI in the novel is created by protagonist Lydia, for much more domestic and trivial reasons than the usual AI of dystopian and science fiction novels. For Lydia, the impetus for creating her AI companion is because she is lonely. Early in the novel we learn the depth of this loneliness and how it stems from the grief she feels at the loss of several family members. Her brother died in a car accident – through flashbacks we slowly learn details about the incident – her father left, and her mother, while physically present, is no longer functioning in Lydia’s life in the way she used to be before the accident.
