Born in North London into an Irish family, Bridget O’Connor (1961-2010) wrote (or co-wrote with Peter Straughan) six plays, among them Becoming the Rose (2000) and The Flags (2006), three screenplays, including Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011), and two collections of short stories, Here Comes John (Cape, 1993) and Tell Her You Love Her (Cape, 1997). Reflecting her background, the bulk of the stories are set in London, typically its northern boroughs, and give voice to the lonely, unfulfilled victims of urban life in materialist society.
