, the first novel in the series featuring police detective Harry Bosch, he is demoted from the Robbery and Homicide Division to the Hollywood Division because he fatally shoots Norman Church, the main suspect in the “Dollmaker” serial killings of eleven women who were either working as prostitutes or as actresses in pornographic films, or were struggling with very strained personal circumstances. The “Dollmaker” had been given the name because, after raping and murdering his victims, he applied garish make-up to their faces. Although Bosch had every reason to believe that Church, who was naked, was reaching under his pillow for a weapon, it turns out that he was reaching for a toupee.
