The Black Ice

, Connelly’s second novel featuring police detective Harry Bosch, opens on Christmas Day. The holiday mood is almost immediately darkened when Bosch is called to a crime scene at a low-end motel, where another police detective, a narcotics officer named Cal Moore, has been found dead of a shotgun blast in the bathroom of a room that he had booked. The death is initially ruled a suicide, but although a suicide note has been found stuffed into Moore’s back pocket, Bosch suspects almost immediately that it might be a homicide. Several weeks earlier, Moore had approached Bosch and confided that an Internal Affairs investigation had been initiated against him.
