17 (September 1907). The first book edition was published in 1908, with illustrations by John Wolcott Adams, by Harper and Brothers in the UK and US. It was republished in 1914 by Hutchinson and Co in the UK alongside seven of Sinclair’s short stories, “The Return of the Prodigal”, “The Gift”, “The Fault”, “Wilkinson’s Wife”, “Miss Tarrant’s Temperament”, “Appearances”, and “The Wrackham Memoirs”, as
