from November 1882 to April 1883. That same year it was also published in book form in New York and London. A small masterpiece of imagination and execution,

For the Major

represents the culmination of Woolson's artistic treatment of the post-Civil War South, a scene she had known intimately as both visitor and resident and which provided the background for some of her finest short stories.
