The Birth of Tragedy

, 1872], written in Basel between 1869 and 1871, was his first major work, and Nietzsche subsequently appended an “Attempt at a Self-Criticism” to the introduction and amended its title to

Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechenthum und Pessimismus

in 1886. The text belongs to the Romantic tradition and exhibits a multiplicity of arguments in relation to art, aesthetics, and tragedy, and is an attempt to find inspiration in Richard Wagner’s operatic works for a rebirth of Greek cultural values in Nietzsche’s contemporary German society. References to Archilochus, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Socrates, Plato, Anaxagoras, Homer and Pindar punctuate the work as Nietzsche critically…
