(1995), Martin Amis's eighth novel, was heralded, prior to publication, by a wave of publicity about the large advance for the book, and for his short story collection,

Heavy Water

(1998), which he had received from his new publisher, HarperCollins. The deal, said to be worth around £500,000 for the two books, had been secured by Amis's new literary agent, Andrew Wiley (known as “The Jackal”). In dispensing with the services of his former literary agent Pat Kavanagh (1940-2008), who had represented him in England for twenty-three years, Amis also fell out for a time with the novelist Julian Barnes (born 1946), who was Kavanagh's husband and Amis's old friend (Amis (2000), 247-9).
