Of The Use of Riches, An Epistle To the Right Honourable Allen Lord Bathurstwas first published on 15 January 1733, just over a year after its companion epistle on false taste addressed to the Earl of Burlington. Pope revised the epistle for the edition of his collected
Works, Vol. II, published on 23 April 1735, adding six lines and writing out the names in full of those persons whose identity was partly disguised by blanks instead of vowels in the first edition. As with the
Epistle to Burlington, Pope went on making small changes to the poem right up to the suppressed “death-bed” edition of
