Chapter I of what Arthur Machen later expanded into the novella

, published in December of 1894, first appeared in a short-lived London weekly magazine called

on December 13, 1890 (Vol. 2, No. 24). In the Introduction to a 1916 reprint of his most famous work, Machen recalled the origins of the short story and the composition of the novella that grew out of it:

. . . in this summer of 1890 there was founded a new weekly paper called The Whirlwind. It advocated Jacobite principles and it printed tales, and it was many months later, sometime in January, 1891, that I set out to write one of my short “society” tales, The City of Resurrections, which is now the third chapter in the book.
