Wharton’s works can be divided into the writings set in the USA and those set in Europe where she spent more than half her life, living in France and travelling in Italy and England.

The Glimpses of the Moon

is one of her European novels, taking place both in northern Italy and France. It was a best-seller when published in 1922, although the reviews were not as positive as for Wharton’s other novels. Wharton was by then established as a very popular writer who had written

(1905),

Ethan Frome

(1911) and

The Age of Innocence

(1920), the novel that enabled her to become the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature.
