was published in 1937, and has in recent years become regarded as one of the outstanding political novels of the 1930s. One reason for this is that Wyndham Lewis’s politics are now better understood than they were. Another is that since the novel was re-edited in 1991, readers have had access to what Lewis wrote, rather than the expurgated version he was forced to publish in 1937. He began writing the novel in 1934, and completed it in 1936, but it was significantly delayed by the insistence of his publishers, Cassell, that he should remove what they regarded as unacceptable sexual material, largely concerning the thoughts and actions of a character called Jack Cruze.
