The first essay, “The Horror of Incest”, was published in March 1912; “Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence” was delivered to the Vienna Psychoanalytical Society on 15th May 1912, and published later that year. The third and fourth essays, “Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thoughts” and “The Return of Totemism in Childhood” were presented to the Vienna Society on 15th January and 4th June 1913 respectively, and then subsequently published that year in the second volume of
