earned her the Whitbread First Novel Award,

the E.M. Foster Award. Her first novel,

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

, was made into a highly popular TV drama that won two BAFTA awards, one for the best TV Drama Series and one for the Best Actress, as well as The Prix d'argent for Best Script in 1991.
