Salman Rushdie’s collection of short stories,
East, West, was published in 1994. Discussing the book in an interview, Rushdie once said that the most important part of its title “was the comma”: “Because it seems to me that I am that comma — or at least that I live in the comma”, he explained (Reder 163).
East, Westis a neatly structured collection of nine stories, or three times three, the first three stories being located in India, the next three in Europe, and the last three dramatising the encounter between east and west. The first six stories had already been published separately in various magazines, but were revised considerably for the collection, whereas the last three had never been published before.
