Patrick Chamoiseau was born on December 3, 1953 in Fort-de-France, Martinique, where he currently resides. After studying law and social sciences in Paris, he started working as a social worker, first in France, then in Martinique. Inspired by Martinican fellow thinker and writer Édouard Glissant and by the study of ethnography, Chamoiseau started taking interest in the disappearing cultural forms of his native island. He thus rediscovered the vitality of his first language, the Creole language, which he had to give up when he started primary school. Chamoiseau has written books of fiction and nonfiction alike, and has also been involved in the production of films. He has won a series of literary prizes, which includes the Prix Carbet in 1990 for
