Born in Modena (at the time, capital of the Este duchy) of a noble family, Alessandro Tassoni attended the University of Ferrara, where he obtained his doctorate in
utroque jure(civil and canon law) in 1576, and subsequently the universities of Pisa and Bologna. It is said that he spent his youth in idleness and studying. In 1597 he was appointed secretary to Cardinal Ascanio Colonna and moved to Rome, where he was involved in various missions to Spain as a diplomat (1600-1602). After this employment he returned to Modena, and only in 1618 passed into the service of Carlo Emanuele I, duke of Savoy, in Turin, where he lived until 1621.
