Carlos Montemayor was a writer, anthropologist, translator, and a professor at the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) in Mexico City. He was highly regarded by the general population, members of social and political movements, in cultural and literary circuits, and by government authorities; and can be considered one of the most outstanding and significant intellectual figures of Mexican public life in the late 20th and early 21st century. His work focuses on what is obscured by official and hegemonic discourses, for example the literature of indigenous cultures, the history of armed and social movements, and the repression of both by, or with the collusion of, the Mexican government.
