Kate Roberts was a renowned Welsh writer and political activist whose popular recognition as “Brehines ein Llên” (Queen of our Literature) conveys the importance and influence of her work in Wales’s literary culture. A distinguished short story writer, dramatist, novelist, and journalist, Roberts’s tales of rural and domestic affairs have endured over the decades to present a writer that used her upbringing near a quarry in north Wales to write stories of the struggles of poverty, to support the survival of the Welsh language, and to explore what grief meant to a person and their community. Her stories have also been adapted for television and the stage, most notably the 1997 television programme
