The Wings of the Dove, the book publication of
The Ambassadorswas delayed to accommodate its serialisation in twelve instalments in
The North American Reviewduring 1903. The complete novel was published later in the same year by Methuen in Great Britain and by Harpers in the United States. For the New York Edition of his work, James lightly revised the text and added a lengthy Preface discussing the genesis of the story and his own literary method (Scribner, 1909).
