Jorge Luis Borges once stated that Pedro Páramo (1955) is one of the best novels in Hispanic literatures, or any literature. His opinion is supported by findings of a 1999 survey undertaken by the Alfaguara publishing house in Spain, which considered Pedro Páramo the best Spanish language novel of the 20th century. Few would suggest that Rulfo’s sole novel avails itself readily of efforts to categorize it within Latin American literature; it is practically anomalous. Certain critical factions have attempted to place Pedro Páramo in the sphere of William Faulkner’s influence. This, however, remains a point of contention.
