All three novels are set in the same fictional town in northern New Brunswick, Canada, and most of the characters in

Evening Snow

appeared first in

Nights.

At the heart of the action is a young couple, Ivan and Cindi Basterache. In the earlier novel, Ivan played a minor role as a comical, somewhat wild 16-year-old living on his own, while Cindi was in the group of Adele Walsh’s high school girlfriends (of the central Walsh family). Young, lacking formal education, and socially naïve, Ivan and Cindi are acted upon by a range of original but at the same time representative…
