Giorgio Scerbanenco, born in Kiyv in 1911, is considered one of Italian Noir’s founding fathers.

He was rediscovered in the 1990s thanks to the

Giovani Cannibali

[Young Cannibals] literary movement which adopted similar narrative strategies and dealt with similar themes, albeit in a much more contemporary Italy.

Scerbanenco’s most famous noir series was set in Milan and published by Garzanti between 1966 and 1969. Venere privata [A Private Venus], is the first novel of the series which finally granted the Ukrainian-born author success and financial serenity as well as longstanding fame and posterity. Unfortunately, Scerbanenco died in 1969 and could not enjoy the recognition and intellectual respect he had longed for his entire life.
