Abu Ibrahim’s Death] is centred on the titular character, Abu Ibrahim, a mid-level government employee who works in the government’s finance department and eventually gets transferred to the commerce department. Plagued strongly by what can be described as urban, middle-class ennui, Abu Ibrahim dreams of owning a plot of land in Dhaka — a city where he and his young family are attempting to set down roots. Zahir’s novel flawlessly captures a claustrophobic urban landscape; from the tiny, cramped balcony in Abu Ibrahim’s government colony flat he keeps revisiting, to the euphoric screams of his young children as the family walk around the colony and marvel at a moonlit night, to a walk around the Dhaka University area where Ibrahim left…
