is usually referred to as the third novel in Anthony Trollope’s Palliser series, central Palliser characters such as Lady Glencora Palliser, Madame Max Goesler and the Duke of Omnium make only brief appearances, and the novel is less overtly political than others in the series. It can happily be read as a stand-alone piece. Written between December 1869 and August 1870, it was serialized in the
