The Eustace Diamondsis usually referred to as the third novel in Anthony Trollope’s Palliser series, central Palliser characters such as Lady Glencora Palliser, Madame Max Goesler and the Duke of Omnium make only brief appearances, and the novel is less overtly political than others in the series. It can happily be read as a stand-alone piece. Written between December 1869 and August 1870, it was serialized in the
Fortnightly Reviewbeginning in July 1871, and published in book form in late 1872.
The main plot follows the exploits and fortunes of the beautiful but unscrupulous Lizzie Greystock. She acquires the diamonds of the title from Sir Florian Eustace, the handsome, wealthy but ailing man she lures into marrying her, and who soon after dies. Mr Camperdown, the zealous
